"The Legend of Korra: Book 3 - Change" Season Wrap-up [Part 1]

by Daniela

First thing's first... WOAH! Daniela missed her Thursday post! My apologies dear readers, my personal life went a bit haywire and week 6 of university happened. You get the jist. But better late than never! This week I've come to you with a behemoth of a post that I've been planning on writing for a while. It's so big that I even had to split it into 2 posts! Look out for part 2 tomorrow!

After months and months of silence, Avatar fans finally got their third season of The Legend of Korra! I've tried to summarise my thoughts about key characters/plots below in an (un)organised fashion. I'd also like to mention that this was written in collaboration with my friend Rosie who helped me come up with some points and remember details that I completely missed.

*WARNING: The Legend of Korra - Book 3 spoilers ahead!*

I liked Book 1 but found that there was too much romance for my liking. Book 2 was alright but sometimes the plot was just too confusing. Book 3 is by far the best season of The Legend of Korra to date. It's darker, gritter and on par with the standard that its predecessor set. Although predictable, it has the best plot, characters and animation of any of the books.Team Avatar is back and up against Zaheer and the Red Lotus. Since Book 2, Korra has lost her connection with her past lives and is trying to keep the balance between the spirit and human worlds. She soon learns about a group of benders lead by Zaheer who have been trying to kidnap her since she was a child. Armed with his newfound ability to airbend, Zaheer plans to bring the world into anarchy and end the Avatar cycle for once for all.

Team Avatar

After the events of harmonic convergence Korra has lost the connection with her past lives and is trying to rebuild the Air Nomads by recruiting new airbenders. Albeit with a bit of force. Korra has come a long way since Book 1 and has experienced her fair share of troubles and triumphs. She’s really come into her role as the Avatar and deals with issues much more maturely. Originally she acted in a way where she just reacted but we can see that she’s more calculative in her thinking. But hey, she’s still got that spunk that made us fall in love with her in the beginning. At the end of Venom of the Red Lotus,  a broken and emotionless Korra sits in a wheelchair and cries a single tear then I cry forever. The end.

Team Avatar assemble!

Mako can’t seem to shake his police persona and turns it on when the opportunity arises. He’s become a much more likeable character by Book 3 and is the butt of a lot of the jokes. Awkward Mako is the best! The guy just can’t deal with being around with both is ex-girlfriends (who seem to enjoy his discomfort as much as anyone). Even his grandmother (unintentionally) makes it awkward for him. Also, can we make Mako’s log book a regular thing? And holy crap, I completely forgot he could lightningbend!

Now everybody loves Bolin! He’s hilarious as always and just as loveable. Bolin has clearly moved on from Eska and has found a new love in Opal, Suyin’s daughter. They’ll always have kale! Bolin struggles with metalbending throughout the season and is constantly pushed in dire situations to no avail. But when the going gets tough, the tough get lavabending! In a pretty predictable plot twist, Bolin discovers that Ghazan isn’t the only lavabender around. I mean it totally makes sense, his dad was an earthbender and his mother was a firebender!

Asami, the only non-bender but puts up one hell of a fight. Asami constantly proves that she’s not just a pretty face with her engineer and business skills. Let’s face it, team Avatar would be stuck in Republic City if it wasn’t for her. When her and Korra were captured by the Earth Queen’s forces, she was pretty much the reason why the escaped. Who fixes the airship? Asami Who builds the sand glider? Asami. Who pilots EVERYTHING? Asami. Who’s kickass with or without bending or the Equalist glove? ASAMI. In short, ASAMI.

The Red Lotus

Zaheer is the leader, a new airbender and a Guru Laghima fanboy. Maybe fanboy isn't the right word, but whatever. Zaheer is an anarchist and is determined to see the end of world leaders. I kind of have mixed feelings about him. On one hand he’s probably one of the best villains in all of Korra and on the other hand he can be a bit… annoying. I get it. The natural order of the world is disorder. I GET IT. But you have to admit that he got the hang of airbending pretty quickly and he has a good grasp on the philosophy behind it. I wonder if he was an air acolyte before. Did I miss that somewhere?

The Red Lotus feat. Korra's butt

P’Li is Zaheer’s girlfriend and a very impressive combustion bender. Rosie likes to call her Sparky Sparky Boom Girl. Other than Zaheer, she’s probably the only member of the Red Lotus who has a hint of a back story. We get a quick snippet of it in the finale when she mentions that a warlord wanted to use her as a weapon but Zaheer saved her. But hang on, isn't Zaheer technically using her as a weapon? I guess it's different because she's actually willing to but... eh. I would assume that she's the most powerful of the group (until Zaheer learned deadly airbending moves) which is makes sense. I wouldn't want to be in her line of sight.

Ghazan is the first lava bender we have encountered in the Avatar universe and he does it very well. I feel like him and Bolin could have really bonded… purely because of the lavabending thing! He’s the laid back member of the Red Lotus with an oddly humorous side to him. Ultimately he commits suicide by earthbending and making the cave collapse rather than going back to prison. Rosie has made her headcanon very clear to me and she believes that Ghazan escaped the Northern air Temple with Ming Hua and lived happily ever after. I’m okay with that.

Now comes the armless water bender, Ming Hua. Yeah, that’s right… ARMLESS. Ming Hua was my favourite member of the Red Lotus because well, she’s pretty badass. Let’s not forget the trick she pulled off by making clothed airbender bodies out of her water tentacles. How do you master an element that relies so heavily on arm movements when you don’t have arms?! In case you're not convinced of how badass she is, I've put a clip at the end. I love how she also mentioned that she used to make up stories about the guards while she was in prison. I do that too Ming Hua… just, not in prison. The only thing I wished for was an episode that would take a look into the members’ backstories, especially Ming Hua's!  Let's not forget that she's also voiced by Grey DeLisle a.k.a AZULA!

Overall I think the Red Lotus is the most interesting and the strongest villains we've been introduced to. I love how we got to know a bit of their personalities and that none of them actually seem to be a weak link. I even felt bad when three of the members died!

P'Li escapes from prison

Watch out for Part 2 tomorrow!
