Deaths and Almost Deaths
I almost counted my almost death in this section because I
think my heart stopped about 50+ times in that finale.
Let’s start it off with the Earth Queen being left
breathless after Zaheer air bends the air out of her lungs. Insert Zaheer's monologue about the world entering into darkness here. This is the first
time we actually get to see air bending used in a deadly way. You could say
it’s the air equivalent to blood bending. It shows that Zaheer is definitely not messing about when it comes to taking out the world leaders! I never liked the Earth Queen. How
could you like her after finding out she ate Bosco and baby bison?! As
unlikeable as she was, I was still pretty shaken by her death.
Tell me how I'm supposed to breathe with no air |
Do you know what’s worse than one of the good characters
dying? When the camera pans away while he gets beaten up, and then the episode
ending, and then having to wait a week to find out if he lives. Admitedly, I
started panicking when Tenzin said “as long as I breathe…” TENZIN YOU DON’T JUST
SAY THAT TO ZAHEER. This was probably the first time when I genuinely didn’t
know if one of the main characters would survive. After tossing it up and
talking to friends, I did eventually realise that it probably wouldn’t happen
but the thought of him actually dying was still a big possibility. I’ll be
honest, Tenzin was getting the better of Zaheer, which made sense since he was
more experienced. He had a very good chance of winning… until he was
outnumbered.
The moment of relief you feel when you realise Tenzin is alive! |
Now for the most jaw-dropping death. I actually gasped and
yelled once I realised what Suyin had just done. Basically, Suyin bends her own
armour around P’Li’s head just moments for she sends sparks towards Lin and…
pretty much self-destructs. Since it’s a kids’ show (psshhh) we don’t actually
see P’Li’s death but we do see the clouds of smoke she leaves behind. If you do
look closely, you can see the cracks in the armour light up just before we cut
to Zaheer’s reaction. This was probably one of the most shocking moments of the
episode and one of my favourites! We just assume the no one could have ever
survived something that… mindblowing. If you think about it, P’Li’s death was
actually quite predictable. We do see a very intimate moment with her and
Zaheer before the battle which should ring bells that something is going to
happen with at least one of them. For Zaheer, this death is a turning point as
he ultimately reaches full enlightenment as his earthly tether is gone. By
letting go of P’Li, Zaheer is able to unlock the ability to fly which only Guru
Laghima was able to do. I love how there was so much thought that was put into
a character death. It really impacts Zaheer and gives him that final push.
The Airbenders
It’s really cool to see plots from the original series being
resolved in the Legend of Korra. The rebirth of the air nomads is something
that Aang would have loved to live to see and Tenzin often mentions that.
The Air Nomads have been reborn after harmonic convergence
as a group of non-benders have suddenly discovered that they have been bestowed
air bending! We see Team Avatar trying to wrangle up as many of these airbenders
as they can and take them tothe Northern Air Temple I love that we got an episode
(Original Airbenders) dedicated to their training. Tenzin goes a bit military
psycho and goes to extreme measures to whip them into shape. We have to
remember that the only people he’s probably trained are his own children (who
have no choice but to listen to him) and Korra. I hope we get to know more of
the individual airbenders a bit more in Book 4. I mean, we met Opal but she was
only of relevance for about 3 episodes and then she pretty much crept into the
background.
One of the new airbenders we do get to know is Kai. Bolin
feels an instant connection with Kai and acts as a big brother, on the other
hand Mako isn’t that trusting. Kai was a thief but is given a second chance
from Team Avatar and a fresh start. He has a complete character arc with him
starting off as rambunctious and ultimately becoming selfless and caring. Plus,
Kai loves baby bison, we love baby bison. All is well. Who could turn down a
bit of puppy love as well? We all say Kainora coming a mile away.
Jinora has finally become an airbending master and has
earned her tattoos! It’s great to see her playing a bigger role since team
Avatar wouldn’t have survived without her connection with the spirit world in
Book 2. Jinora has definitely grown a lot since the beginning of the series and
it seems like she’ll play a key part in training the new airbenders in Book 4. She
already proved that she’s a more than capable leader in the final battle by
rallying up the airbenders and creating a tornado that sucked up Zaheer and
Korra. Here’s hoping that Book 4 contains more of Jinora and gives her more of
a speaking role! She’s often there but just never gets to talk. I’d love to see
her and her owning her role as a leader and air bending master. Maybe she could
teach Tenzin a thing or two? On another
note, who else get emotional seeing Jinora resembling a female Aang?
Hopes for Book 4
- More amazingly animated fight scenes. This fights in this season almost felt like a video game! Especially that finale!
- More Avatar parallels! The final battle was a huge parallel to Aang’s fight against Firelord Ozai in the Avatar finale.
- More backstory for the Red Lotus. I know Zaheer wanted anarchy but there are plenty more members than just the four.
- Finding out the relevance of Kuvira. YOU WERE INTRODUCED IN THE FINALE, YOU MUST BE RELEVANT IN THE NEXT SEASON?!
- See more of the consequences of a broken Korra.
- Seeing Jinora act as a leader of the Air Nomads.
- That we finally see adult Toph (not through a flashback) and that we learn more of what Sokka did after their adventures. We finally got to see Zuko this season and we’ve seen Katara before.
- Original team Avatar actually in scenes together.
- Asami kicking more butt.
- Korra getting the connection with her past lives back.
